What Are Dental Fillings?

What Are Dental Fillings?

Do you know what fillings do to your teeth? Dental fillings replace a part of your tooth that has been lost due to damage, decay or dental cavities. Filling procedures usually  are done with local anesthesia. The process will start by cleaning or removing the decayed part of your tooth, and then the tooth will be etched and dried. After etching and drying, the filling material will be put and smoothed off your tooth. Then, the dentist will apply a bright light to set the filling. Lastly, the filling will be adjusted and  polished.

Dentists have been using silver amalgam fillings for many years, but now there are other types of dental fillings that dentist recommends to their patients. The different types of fillings include tooth coloured composite resin, porcelain,  glass ionomer, and ceramics or gold.

Only your dentist can determine whether you have a cavity that requires dental fillings. During a checkup, your dentist will use a small mirror to check the surfaces of your teeth, may assisted by special light. Anything that looks abnormal will then be closely examined with special instruments. Your dentist may also take an X-ray of your entire mouth or a section of it. The type of dental fillings your dentist chooses will depend on the severity of damage caused by tooth decayand your will.
